Querrey stuns Murray

For the second consecutive year, Sam Querrey beats the defending champion and the seed no.1 in Wimbledon. In 2016, the American stunned Novak Djokovic in the 3rd round, this year Sam takes out home favorite Andy Murray in the quarters.

The match

Andy was the clear favorite to win this encounter, but there were some doubts about his physical conditions since he has been struggling for a while with a problem to his hip. The Briton said that he was getting better and better, but things went pretty south during this quarter.

It seemed as Murray was having a smooth run against Querrey after he was leading 6-3 4-3 (1 break up). The American looked to be doomed to lose in straight sets. Then, all of the sudden, Sam broke Andy twice to win 3 consecutive games and conquer the 2nd set.

When Murray got a 3-1 lead in the third set, it seemed that he had the match again in his hands, but he had to work hard to win the set at the breaker after he dropped another service game.

Andy’s physical conditions deteriorated rapidly, and he was obliterated in the 4th of 5th set to win a combined 2 games in the rest of the match, but it was clear that he was struggling big time with his hip. Querrey won this match 3-6 6-4 6-7 (4) 6-1 6-1.

I am still in shock. QUERREY

Soon after the match, Sam commented

“I’m still in a little bit of shock myself. I’m just thrilled right now. I didn’t start my best; I just kept with it, kept swinging away and then just kind of found my rhythm in the fourth and fifth set and then everything seemed to be falling my way then.

This is a dream come true: to be in the semi-finals and for it to be at Wimbledon makes it a little more special.”

The semi-final against Cilic

Sam will face an in-form Marin Cilic in the semi-final. The head to head is 4-0 for the Croatian that has defeated Sam already twice in Wimbledon. In 2012, they played the second longest match in Wimbledon history after Cilic won 7-6 (6) 6-4 6-7 (2) 6-7 (3) 17-15.
