Gulbis stuns Del Potro

Mad Max Gulbis is back!

The “crazy” and entertaining Latvian has been sidelined by injuries for long, and it seemed as he was lost forever. Just out of the blue, Ernests wins the first two matches of Wimbledon in styles without dropping a single set and beating Juan Martin Del Potro in the second round.

Gulbis was uncharacteristically focussed against the Argentine to drop only 11 points on his serve after he fired 25 aces (44 winners).  The final score was 7-6 (1) 6-4 6-4.

I feel comfortable on both sides. GULBIS

Soon after the match, Ernests explains why he feels fine

“I was very relaxed. The win didn’t really surprise me because I’m just in a relaxed state of mind right now.

I’ve been hitting the ball well already for more than a month. I was hitting the ball well in Paris, but it was a tough first round. My shots are really clean right now. I feel very confident on both sides. As soon as I’m relaxed, I can produce this kind of tennis.”

Next vs. Djokovic

Gulbis will now face Novak Djokovic in the third round. The head to head is 6-1 for the Serbian, but Ernests can definitely produce another sensational upset.
