With two singles titles in the WTA, Donna Vekic has made herself one of the fastest rising names in the field of tennis. Vekic, who is gunning to redeem herself after getting eliminated in the first round in last year’s U.S. Open, ranks No. 23 in the WTA rankings, after peaking at No. 22 in June. She has become a star in her home country of Croatia, where she shares popularity with fellow tennis player Petra Martic.

Vekic was born to parents that were both active in sports. However, none of the two had any remote connection to tennis. Her father, Igor, used to play football as he was part of a huge football family in her birthplace of Osijek, Croatia. Meanwhile, her motherBrankicaused to participate in 100m dash, 100m hurdle, and 400m dash. Vekic’s brother, Bruno, is actually also a football player at the moment.

Before she discovered tennis, Vekic actually wanted to be a gymnast. At six years old, she was already incredibly active as a gymnast until she accidentally twisted her ankle during one of her practices. Since she does not want to be at rest, she considered tennis, which she eventually loved.

As far as female tennis players go, the 23-year old ace is actually quite short, standing at 1.79 meters. On the relationship front, Vekic has also opened up about her life as a single person. The Croatian star just had a recent break-up with her former boyfriend, three-time Grand Slam champion Stan Wawrinka. The two, who were together for four years, consciously did not talk about their break-up to the press because they want to keep things private.

Since she is single now, she has spoken about her liking for sports people and men with good hairstyles. She says that her attraction to sports people is partly caused by the fact that only a person who knows how a professional athlete’s life would understand her busy schedule.

Career

Vekic became a professional player in 2012, the same year that she reached the finals of the 2012 Tashkent Open. When she qualified for the finals, she became the youngest female player to reach a WTA finals since 2005.

She debuted in the top 100 rankings in 2013, where she finished as the runner-up in the Birmingham Classic. The next year, she won her first WTA title in the Kuala Lumpur Open. She won her second WTA title three years later in the Nottingham Open.
