CONTROVERSY. Federer, Djokovic win for retirements

Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic had an extremely smooth start of their Wimbledon campaign after their opponents retired.

Djokovic

Nole had to face an injured Martin Klizan that was clearly struggling from the very beginning. The Slovakian had a problem for months to his Achilles (left leg), but he still decided to play not to miss the opportunity to face Nole on center court, and probably more important, to pocket £35,000.

Eventually, this was an awkward scene, and Klizan retired when he was 6-3 2-0 down.

Federer

Soon after Djokovic, Roger stepped on the center court against Dolgopolov. The scene was similar, but a little less awkward. The Ukrainian was struggling with his ankle, but at least he was able to fight a bit in the first set.  Roger won this match in 43 minutes after Dolgopolov retire on a 3-6 0-3 scoreline.

Even if this was the most “publicized” situation, on day 2, five other players retired as follows

Tipsarevic (he was 0-5 down against Donaldson), Troicki (he was 1-6 against Troicki), Kyrgios (he was 3-6 4-6 against Herbert), Istomin (7-5 4-6 4-6 2-4 against Young), Lopez (he was 7-5 1-6 1-6 3-4 against Mannarino).floows.

Probably the most infamous of all was Tomic that after losing 6-4 6-3 6-4 to Mischa Zverev he declared he was bored and uninterested, but happy to get the £35,000 check.

Something to revise? Probably that first round £35,000 check is too fat?
