Feliciano Lopez wins the Queens title

In 2014 Feliciano Lopez lost a heartbreaker in the Queens finals at the hands of Grigor Dimitrov 6-7 (8) 7-6 (1) 7-6 (6) after he wasn’t able to convert a match point. For this reason, Feliciano had a sort of unfinished business at Queens. After three years, the Spaniard managed to win the title at Queens in the same way he lost it in 2014 after saving a match point.

This year the final was against an in-form Marin Cilic. The Croatian won the only break of the match at the end of the first set to win the opener 6-4. Then both sets went straight to the breakers. Feliciano won the first one at 2, but the third set tiebreak was a huge thriller. Lopez saved a match point with a stretching volley when he was 5-6 down. Then it was Cilic to save two match points when he was 6-7 and 7-8 down. Eventually, Feliciano won the match on a 3rd match point after Marin missed a forehand.

It was so difficult to handle my nerves. LOPEZ

Soon after the match, an elated Lopez commented

“I cannot believe that I’ve finally won this trophy. It’s the best week of my career; to win this tournament at this stage of my career, it’s so amazing.

It’s tough to put that match point (in 2014) away from my mind. I was serving for the match again; it was so difficult to handle my nerves.”

At 35 I am playing my best tennis

Then the   Spaniard added, “It’s tough to believe at 35 that I’m playing my best tennis, but I am.”

Next step: Wimbledon
