TENNIS SCORES. Halep downs Gibbs in the 1st round of the U.S. Open

Simona Halep topples Nicole Gibbs 6-3 3-6 6-2 in the 1^st round in New York on Tuesday. Halep will play against Taylor Townsend in the 2^nd round.

1^st set.

Halep conquered a leading position at the beginning of the set after breaking Gibbs in the 1^st game (1-0). Notwithstanding, there was more work to do for Simona to win the set because Gibbs managed to break back in the 6^th (3-3) game. Halep maintained her cool to break Gibbs in the 7^th (4-3) and in the 9^th (6-3) game.

2^nd set.

Gibbs commenced this set in the best possible way after breaking Halep in the 1^st game (1-0). Notwithstanding, that wasn’t sufficient for Gibbs to win the set as the Romanian managed to break back in the 6^th (2-4) and in the 8^th (3-5) game. The American kept her focus to break Halep in the 7^th (5-2) and in the 9^th (6-3) game.

Nicole failed to serve out the set when leading 5-2 to be broken at 40.

3^rd set.

Halep was in a great position at the beginning of the set to break Gibbs in the 1^st game (1-0). Halep managed to strengthen her lead after breaking Nicole in the 5^th (4-1) game before winning the set (6-2).

Simona was effective when converting 54% of the break points that she conquered (7/13). On the other side, Gibbs had some problems in converting her break points as she converted only 42% of her break points (5/12). That was one of the key issues for her demise.
