Becker declared bankrupt!

Boris Becker has been a tennis icon. The German has won 6 slams and 49 career titles. Boris has definitely amassed a lot of cash during his professional life, but probably he has also managed to waste it all!

What happened?

The tennis legend had an outstanding debt since October 2015, and apparently, he wasn’t able to pay the money back. Therefore, registrar Christine Derrett had to take action declaring that there was no evidence that the German would have been able to honour his debt.

The bankruptcy application was made by the private bankers Arbuthnot Latham & Co. Boris had to pay the debt after mortgaging his house in Mallorca to raise €6m.

Becker’s statement

Boris released the following statement

“I was surprised and disappointed that Arbuthnot Latham chose to bring these proceedings against me. This order relates to one disputed loan which I was due to repay in full in one month’s time. It is disappointing that my request for today’s hearing to be postponed until this time was refused.

My earnings are well publicised and it is clear that I have the means to repay this debt. The value of the asset in question far exceeds the debt owed to Arbuthnot Latham. I intend to make an application to have this order set aside immediately. In the meantime, I will concentrate on my work and in particular my presenting duties at Wimbledon for the BBC and other international outlets.”

Probably he had more luck on court…

THIS IS A TOUGH ONE
