Halep close to world no.1

Simona Halep is getting closer and closer to become worldno.1 after Angelique Kerber retired from Birmingham.

Simona and Karolina Pliskova have already withdrawn from the event. Now it’s time for the German to pull out for injury.

According to Angelique, she struggled with her leg to comment

“It started yesterday. It is my left hamstring. It is the same as what I had in Madrid. It was okay and then I started practicing again after Paris so I started feeling it the last few days. I don’t want to risk nothing.”

Angelique was defending 100 points in Birmingham where she reached the quarters last year. That means that she will have only 85 points more than world no.2 Simona Halep at the beginning of next week. If fact, the German will have 6,935pts (7,035 -100) vs. Simona’s 6,850pts.

This means that if the Romanian decided to play in Birmingham, she would have been the new world no.1 if she would have won 2 matches (+100pts).

Will Simona try her luck in Eastbourne the following week?
