Ostapenko wins the Roland Garros after an incredible comeback

Jelena Ostapenko makes history in Paris.

After an amazing run, Jelena had to face a huge hurdle in this French Open final against Simona Halep that was the clear favorite to win the event.

In the final, Simona was taking full advantage of her experience to grab a 6-4 3-0 lead. The Romanian also had three opportunities to make it 4-0, but from that moment Ostapenko started to fire missiles after missiles at her opponent to conquer four consecutive games and lead 4-3. After an exchange of breaks, the Latvian won the second set 6-4. The decider had a narrative similar to the previous set with Simona Halep clinching a 3-1 lead.  Once again, Jelena started to blast winner after winner to win five consecutive games and conquer this fantastic match. The final score was 4-6 6-4 6-3.

Why this title is incredible

This title was unique for many reasons.

First, Jelena hasn’t won any title on tour; therefore, winning a slam as a first tournament is rather unique.

Second, Jelena is the first Latvian to have won a slam.

Finally, but this is a heartbreaker, after her double comeback (second and third set), Jelena prevented Simona Halep from winning her first slam and become the new world no.1.

After this tournament, Ostapenko will be ranked 12th in the world (she is currently no.47). She will get in the top10 pretty soon.
