A new rule from the International Padel Federation (FIP) changes the way matches are decided when they are 40-40. The goal of this alteration is to reduce protracted deuce exchanges and make games more decisive and lively.

How the system functions

Once the score hits 40-40, players will only be permitted a maximum of two advantages under the new regulation. The so-called “Star Point” will be played if the game reaches a third deuce. The match will now include a strategic component as both receivers will choose which side of the court will return the serve.

Implications for strategy

The purpose of this invention is to heighten the suspense and excitement during pivotal moments. It is anticipated that matches will become more interesting for fans and force players to modify their tactics by reducing the amount of advantages and adding a decisive point.

From the Federation’s voice

Luigi Carraro, head of the International Padel Federation, stated that “the Star Point is a step forward to make padel more attractive and fair, ensuring matches remain thrilling without unnecessary prolongation.”
