Roger Federer is arguably one of the most iconic players to ever step foot on a professional tennis court. Holding the most Grand Slam singles titles in professional male tennis history, Federer shows no sign of stopping as he is still ranked third in the world. Born in Basel, Switzerland, Federer is currently 38 and he holds both Swiss and South African citizenship. His father, Swiss-German Robert Federer, and mother, Afrikaner Lynette Federer, raised him near the French and German borders of Switzerland. Because he lived in a cultural melting pot, Federer can speak Standard German, Swiss German, English, French, some Italian and a little of Swedish.
Apart from tennis, Federer also grew up with an avid interest in other sports. He is a big fan of the Swiss national football team and FC Basel. He also said that his exquisite hand-eye coordination can be credited to the sports he used to play as a child like basketball and badminton.
Professional career
Federer started his relatively quick ascent to tennis stardom in 1998 when he won both the singles and doubles matches in the junior Wimbledon league. That very same year, he also reached US Open Junior final but he lost to David Nalbandian. Because of his success, he was announced as No. 1 in the junior world ranking.
He entered the seniors top 100 world ranking in 1999, defeating the champion of the 1998 French Open Carlos Moya. A year after, he reached his first final in the Marseille Open. Along with fellow player Martina Hingis, he represented Switzerland in the 2001 Hopman Cup and won.
But it was his victory over then-four time defending champion Pete Sampras that brought him international media attention. He eventually lost in the quarter-finals but that strengthened his reputation as an up-and-coming star.
He earned his first Grand Slam title in 2003 at Wimbledon, which started a dominant streak in the tennis world. In 2004, for example, he earned the title in the Australian Open, U.S. Open and Wimbledon tournaments. Right now, he has 20 Grand Slam singles titles.

With regards to Roger Federer personal life, he married fellow tennis player Miroslava Vavrinec, known as Mirka, who he met in the 2000 Sydney Olympics. The couple has two pairs of twins, born in 2009 (Myla Rose and Charlene Riva) and 2014 (Lenny and Leo). They are currently living in their family residence in Bottmingen, Switzerland.
