Anastasia Potapova has officially confirmed that she will represent Austria in her professional tennis career starting in 2026. The Russian-born player shared her excitement about the move, highlighting her connection to the country. “I am delighted to let you all know that my application for citizenship has been accepted by the Austrian Government. Austria is a place I love, is incredibly welcoming and a place where I feel totally at home. I love being in Wien and look forward to making my second home there. As part of this I am proud to announce that starting from 2026 I will be representing my new homeland Austria in my professional tennis career from this point onwards,” Potapova said.
Similarities with Daria Kasatkina’s message
Fans quickly noticed that Potapova’s announcement closely resembled the message Daria Kasatkina had shared earlier in the year when she revealed her switch to Australia. Kasatkina’s statement also emphasized her love for her new country and her pride in representing it. “I am delighted to let you all know that my application for permanent residency has been accepted by the Australian Government. Australia is a place I love, is incredibly welcoming and a place where I feel totally at home. I love being in Melbourne and look forward to making my home there. As part of this, I am proud to announce that I will be representing my new homeland, Australia, in my professional tennis career from this point onwards,” Kasatkina wrote at the time.
Kasatkina’s amused reaction
When fans pointed out the similarities between the two announcements and accused Potapova of copying, Kasatkina responded with humor. “💀” she wrote on social media, before adding: “And no, we are not from same agency😂.”
A growing trend among Russian players
Potapova’s decision follows similar moves by Kasatkina and Kamilla Rakhimova, who have also changed nationalities in recent months. The trend reflects a broader shift among Russian tennis players seeking new opportunities and stability abroad.
Potapova’s switch to Austria marks a significant step in her career, while Kasatkina continues to represent Australia. Both players remain central figures in the ongoing conversation about nationality changes in professional tennis, a topic that continues to spark debate among fans and analysts.
