Simona Halep is about to start her run at the US Open. This edition is extremely uncertain as it is difficult to pick up a clear favorite. Simona is definitely among the top players that can win the title, but there is another competitor of Romanian origin that is in the mix: Bianca Andreescu.
The Canadian is making strides in the WTA tour especially after winning 2 prestigious titles in Indian Wells and Toronto.
In the past, Simona and Bianca trained together, and the Romanian always had the impression that Andreescu could do well on tour.
Simona Halep about Bianca Andreescu
During the US Open pre-tournament press conference, Simona was asked about her opinion on Bianca. Halep replied:
“I always said that she’s a fighter and she deserves to win these matches because she doesn’t give up. She’s working hard as I heard; I have no connection with her like we are not friends or something.”
Talking about their past interaction, Simona added:
“I just told her at that time, a few years ago, to become a pro because she has enough power to do that. But that’s it is not my credit here [about her success]. So she’s a good player, and I’m sure that she can win more.”
Simona will kick start her US Open campaign against Nicole Gibbs. The head to head is 1-0 for the Romanian that defeated Nicole in the first round in Shenzhen last year 6-4 6-1.
Bianca will play her first round at the Flushing meadows against Katie Volynets.
