The Sunday’s match of the day at the Roland Garros was Mladenovic vs. Muguruza, and that didn’t disattend the expectations.
On one side Kiki Mladenovic was becoming more and more the darling of the French crowd, on the other side the French Open defending champion was eager to have another great run in Paris.
Mladenovic was off to a fantastic start against the Spaniard to win the opener 6-1. But Garbine didn’t want to go out without a fight, and she bounced back in style to win the second set 6-3. Everything became extremely tense in the decider; the Frenchwoman was generally better than her opponent from the baseline, but she was really struggling with her serve to commit 16 (!!!) double faults. Eventually, Kiki took full advantage of the support of the local crowd to win the contest 6-3 3-6 6-3.

The atmosphere was amazing. MLADENOVIC
In the post-match press conference, Kiki commented
“The atmosphere was just amazing, I thought, even though it’s not easy to handle for both of us. It’s lots of pressure, even for me, even if I had like a thousand-people screaming and cheering up for me; it’s not easy to control the nerves and the pressure.
I could also hear that same thousand of people feeling so down when I would double fault. So, it’s not easy to concentrate and keep, you know, the confidence up and to keep it up.”
Next vs. Bacsinszky
Kiki will play Timea Bacsinszky in the quarters. The Swiss defeated Venus Williams 5-7 6-2 6-1. Thea head to head is 1-all, but the Frenchwoman will have the huge support of the crowd to get to the semis.
