Ana Ivanovic has filed for divorce from World Cup winner Bastian Schweinsteiger after nine years of marriage. The couple, once considered one of sport’s most recognisable partnerships, married in Venice in 2016 following a high-profile romance that began in 2014.
Ivanovic, a former world number one who won the French Open in 2008, retired from tennis later that same year, while Schweinsteiger continued his football career after leaving Bayern Munich for Manchester United in 2015.
Official separation
In July, Ivanovic’s representative Christian Schertz confirmed their separation, citing “irreconcilable differences.” According to BILD, Ivanovic officially filed for divorce in November at the Munich District Court.
The former tennis star has also reportedly filed for child support in Palma de Mallorca, where she resides with the couple’s three sons, Luka, Leon, and Teo. Their youngest child was born in 2023.
Strain on the marriage
Reports earlier this year suggested the couple had been in crisis due to conflicting lifestyles. Schweinsteiger’s frequent travel for punditry commitments contrasted with Ivanovic spending more time in Serbia, supported by her family in Belgrade.
Their last public appearance together was at the Laver Cup in Berlin in September 2024. Later that year, they shared an Instagram post from a Christmas market, but updates on family life became increasingly rare.
Alleged affair
German media reported that Schweinsteiger had been seen with a new partner, identified only as “Silva,” a Bulgarian woman connected through their children’s school. BILD claimed the relationship had been ongoing since the summer of 2024, with the pair holidaying together in Morocco and Mallorca.
According to Bunte, Ivanovic had initially considered forgiving Schweinsteiger for the sake of their family but ended the marriage after he reportedly told her he wanted to “live freely.”
Silence from representatives
Both Ivanovic and Schweinsteiger’s representatives declined to comment when contacted by BILD, leaving speculation to swirl around the future of one of sport’s most high-profile couples.
