Andy Murray, former World No. 1 and winner of three Grand Slam titles and two Olympic gold medals, retired from professional tennis in the summer of 2024. After a brief break, he took on the role of coach for his former rival Novak Djokovic. The collaboration between the two legends lasted only from November 2024 to May 2025.
Djokovic’s results during Murray’s tenure
During their time together, Djokovic reached the semi-final of the Australian Open and the final of the Miami Open. However, an injury sustained during the Australian Grand Slam disrupted their plans for the early months of 2025. “It was certainly a difficult few months for him, but also I think for the team and all of us,” Murray explained.
Murray’s reflections on coaching
Speaking on the Tennis Podcast, Murray admitted that the partnership did not deliver the success he had hoped for. “I was disappointed. Probably didn’t get the results I would have liked for him. But I learned a lot about what coaching is,” he said.
Praise for Djokovic’s attitude
Despite the challenges, Murray highlighted the quality of Djokovic’s performances before the injury and his demanding approach to the sport. “I saw him play ridiculous tennis in that tournament,”
Murray recalled. He added: “Novak, like myself, is a challenging character in terms of the way he goes about his tennis, is extremely demanding. I look back on it and I’m glad that I did it. It’s an amazing experience that I’ve had.”Novak Djokovic in 2025
Ranked no.4, Djokovic played his last match on the 8th of November when he defeated world no.8 Lorenzo Musetti 4-6 6-3 7-5 in the final in Athens to win his 101st career title.
At present, during this year Djokovic has a 39-11 win-loss record. Djokovic conquered 2 titles in 2025 in Geneva and Athens. Novak was the finalist in Miami.
Djokovic is scheduled to compete next in Brisbane (Brisbane International). He will begin to play the tournament from the main draw that will commence on the 29th of December.
