At the Northern Palmyra Trophies, a Russian exhibition event, Anastasia Potapova represented the Lions team alongside Diana Shnaider, Alexander Bublik and Tallon Griekspoor. They faced Daniil Medvedev, Karen Khachanov, Veronika Kudermetova and Yulia Putintseva. The competition featured singles, doubles, and mixed doubles matches, remaining tight until the end. The Lions ultimately secured victory with a narrow 105-101 scoreline.

The suspension of Russian and Belarusian tournaments

In early 2022, the ATP, WTA and ITF suspended all tournaments in Russia and Belarus. Both countries were also banned from participating in the Davis Cup, the Billie Jean King Cup and the United Cup. These restrictions significantly limited opportunities for Russian players to compete in international team events.

An alternative stage for Russian players

Despite the bans, Russian players found a chance to compete in the Northern Palmyra Trophies, which has been hosted regularly since 2022. The event provided a platform for athletes to maintain competitive rhythm and showcase their skills in a team format, even if outside the official tennis calendar.

Potapova’s perspective on team competitions

Potapova expressed her desire to see Russia return to international team events. “I think so. For me personally. I’ve always been happy playing on a team. I’m both a team player and an individual player. I can also play solo. But for me, it’s always been fun; I’ve always loved it. I hope that will change soon,” she told Championat when asked about the exclusion of Russian players from team competitions.

The WTA’s position

Following the debut of the Northern Palmyra Trophies in 2022, the WTA was contacted for clarification. The organization confirmed that it could not prevent players from participating in non-Tour tournaments. This stance allowed Russian athletes to remain active in exhibition formats, even while barred from official international competitions.
