The Gibraltar Padel Tennis Association (GPTA) has been officially accepted as the newest member of the International Padel Federation (FIP). The decision was approved at Friday’s FIP General Assembly in Acapulco, Mexico, following a successful application process.

A step in Gibraltar’s favor

As a result of its approval, the GPTA is now a member of the global governing body of padel, alongside some of the most influential padel nations worldwide. This marks a significant turning point in the development of the game in Gibraltar, recognizing its growth and laying the groundwork for further development.

Expanding opportunities for regional players

It is expected that local athletes, coaches, and officials will gain exposure, have more opportunity to compete internationally, and develop as a result of their involvement in the FIP. As the sport continues to grow rapidly worldwide, Gibraltar’s inclusion increases padel’s awareness on the global scale and increases opportunities for the local populace.

The official answer from Gibraltar

Sport Minister Leslie Bruzon praised the group and emphasized the effort that went into the achievement.

Bruzon said on Friday, “I am thrilled by the news from Mexico this evening.”

“The GPTA’s full membership in the International Padel Federation is a significant step.”

“Without the diligent efforts of the GPTA committee, which was led by Ashley Perez, Gareth Jones, and numerous others behind the scenes, this would not have been possible.”

“Padel is one of the fastest-growing sports in the world, and the same is true locally.”

“It is a tremendous accomplishment and a source of immense pride for our community that the GPTA is now on an equal footing with the world’s most powerful nations.”

“We cannot undervalue the potential positive impact of this historic occasion.”
