Greek tennis star Stefanos Tsitsipas was linked to a speeding violation on September 24, when his Lotus was reportedly clocked at 210 km/hr on the Attiki Odos highway. The case quickly drew attention after reports suggested that Tsitsipas himself was behind the wheel.
The €2,000 fine
According to Tennisnews.gr, Tsitsipas was summoned and received a €2,000 fine under Greece’s new digital traffic-fine system, which uses cameras to detect speed, identify license plates, and automatically issue penalties. The system has only recently been implemented, making this one of the first high-profile cases under the new rules.
Attorney’s statement
Tsitsipas’ lawyer, Thanasis Papathanasiou, clarified the situation in an interview with Tennisnews.gr. “Regarding the incident that was made public, the car was being driven by a third person. The issue of the fine and the surrender of the license have all been handled,” Papathanasiou said. His comments directly addressed speculation that Tsitsipas himself was driving.
Rumors of suspension
Earlier reports suggested that Tsitsipas’ license had been suspended for one year. However, Papathanasiou’s statement indicates that while the fine and license surrender were processed, the player was not personally responsible for the speeding.
Looking ahead
The case highlights the strict enforcement of Greece’s new traffic system and the scrutiny faced by public figures. For Tsitsipas, the clarification from his attorney may ease speculation, but the incident remains a reminder of the challenges athletes encounter off the court as well as on it.
