Italy powered past Austria in the Davis Cup quarter-finals, securing a place in the semi-finals and moving closer to becoming the first nation in 53 years to win three consecutive titles. Despite the absence of top players Jannik Sinner and Lorenzo Musetti, the Italian team delivered commanding performances in Bologna.

Berrettini sets the tone

Matteo Berrettini opened the tie with a 6-3, 7-6(4) win over Jurij Rodionov. After taking the first set with a single break, Berrettini faced a tough challenge in the second when he fell behind 2-5. He saved three set points at 4-5, rallied to level at 5-5, and carried the momentum into the tie-break to seal victory.

Berrettini reflected on the pride of representing Italy: “When I play for my country I just think about trying to win the next point, trying to fight really hard for my team-mates, for everybody who is here and everyone who is watching from home. That’s the biggest privilege. If I win it’s better, but I try to enjoy being out there every time. It is something so special.” – Matteo Berrettini

Cobolli seals the win

Flavio Cobolli followed with a resounding 6-1, 6-3 victory over Austria’s Filip Misolic. The 23-year-old dominated the opening set in just 30 minutes, breaking serve three times. He tightened his grip in the second set, racing to a 3-0 lead before closing out the match with confidence.

Cobolli echoed his teammate’s sentiments: “We all want to win this cup and I felt the support of the bench, it was unbelievable. When I play for them, it is something which I cannot describe.” – Flavio Cobolli

Italy extended its Davis Cup winning streak to 12 ties, dating back to the group stages of the 2023 tournament. The team now prepares for a semi-final clash against Belgium, who defeated France earlier in Bologna. In the other half of the draw, Spain face the Czech Republic before Argentina take on Germany.

Italy’s blend of experience and youthful energy has kept their campaign alive, with Berrettini and Cobolli stepping up in the absence of Sinner and Musetti to keep the dream of a historic third consecutive Davis Cup crown within reach.
