The “City of Padel,” as proposed by Cristiano Ronaldo, was supposed to revolutionize the sport in Portugal. The complex, which would have been close to Lisbon, would have had 17 courts, a 2,000-seat arena, a café, and a gym. The project, which was supported by private investors and the Portuguese Padel Federation, sought to establish Oeiras as a center for the quick spread of padel throughout Europe.
Technical evaluations, however, showed serious problems with ground stability that would necessitate expensive and time-consuming foundation construction. The project’s financial viability was undermined when the local council refused to pay for the extra costs.
Environmental issues and community opposition
In addition to the structural difficulties, the project encountered growing local opposition. Zoning laws and the environmental impact close to the Jamor forest have drawn criticism. A popular petition called “City of Padel? No!” increased public opposition and put political pressure on the already precarious project.
In the end, Ronaldo and his partners decided to give up on the development due to these obstacles.
Ronaldo’s unwavering dedication to padel
Ronaldo continues to play a significant role in the development of padel despite the setback. He often practices with elite players, such as world number one Arturo Coello, and operates a padel club in Lisbon. His impact keeps raising awareness of the sport in Portugal and beyond.
As a representative of the Portuguese Padel Federation put it, “Cristiano is passionate about padel and has helped bring attention to the sport in ways few others can.”
Ronaldo continues to play a significant part in padel’s future, even though the “City of Padel” may not be in the cards. As the sport continues to gain popularity around the world, new opportunities are probably going to present themselves.
