During a light-hearted interview, Jannik Sinner opened up about his mother Siglinde’s unique approach to watching his matches. Known for her calm demeanor, she once made a very specific promise to her son. “When I started to play better, I’m talking about 2-3 years ago, Mom told me ‘I don’t want to be in your box, but if you make a Grand Slam final in Europe I want to be there.’ Initially I laughed, I told her it would never happen,” Sinner recalled.

That moment arrived sooner than expected. When Sinner reached the final at Roland Garros, he called his mother to let her know. “She says ‘I’m coming tomorrow’ so she comes, she sits in my box and she watches a match where everything and more happened [laughs] but she stayed there! I told her that she survived that, so she can survive everything,” he added.

Rome, Paris, and the Wimbledon ultimatum

Sinner went on to describe how his mother’s attendance has become a running theme in his career. “In Rome she came to the tournament, she didn’t watch any match but she was at the final. I lost it. In Paris she was there, I lost it,” he said. The pattern of her presence coinciding with defeats didn’t go unnoticed.

When Siglinde mentioned she would attend Wimbledon, Sinner admitted he had a cheeky thought. “I didn’t tell her, but I wanted to tell her that it’s her last chance!”

he joked, drawing laughter from the audience.

Fans relate to Siglinde’s nerves

The interview began with a humorous observation from the host, who noted that Siglinde’s expression during matches mirrored that of many fans watching Sinner play. The suggestion that she—and the fans—might need a mental coach was met with laughter, as Sinner’s stories painted a picture of a mother deeply invested yet quietly enduring the emotional rollercoaster of elite tennis.

The anecdotes offered a rare glimpse into the personal side of one of tennis’s rising stars, showing that behind the fierce competition and high-stakes matches, there’s always room for family, humor, and a bit of superstition.
