Coco Gauff became a household name when she defeated her idol Venus Williams in Wimbledon this year. Ever since her fan base has grown rapidly and it is expected that she will be in the spotlight when she plays in the US Open in her native country.

What did Coco say about her win over Venus Williams in Wimbledon?

Coco earned the distinction of becoming the youngest qualifier in the history of Wimbledon to make it to the main draw. She also became the youngest woman to win a match at Wimbledon in 30 years. She was over the moon when she defeated her idol Venus Williams. She commented:

“I feel it’s harder to kinda wrap my head around it because I just looked up to her for so long. Sometimes I’ll tell my dad like, ‘I got to play Venus. Can you believe it?’ So to me, it’s crazy.”

The craze around this teen has been phenomenal. All aspects of her life have been discussed in the media. Fans want to know more about her. Some believe that such craze about her might cause a bit of issue for the young player. Andy Roddick has asked the fans to give her a bit of space when she plays in the US Open.

Coco herself is still adjusting to her newly found fame. She says:

“It was crazy because growing up, I just thought about winning tournaments and playing Wimbledon and the Grand Slams, but I never thought about all that would come with it,” she said. “So I guess I kinda didn’t really prepare myself for it … I’m still getting used to it.”

Despite this incredible attention to her, Coco is focussed on her performances and she is always looking for ways to improve her game. Gauff always focusses on winning a match when she is competing. She says:

“I always, like, try to push myself,” she said. “I know that I’m doing well. But I don’t tell myself, ‘oh, I’m pretty good I think, ’cause I think I can always improve.”

“I won’t step on the court unless I think I can win,” she said. “I think it’s just silly for me to go into a match thinking that I’m gonna lose or thinking that I’m lucky to be here because it took a lot of work to be here.”

Coco wants to be a champion, one of the greatest that has ever played the game and she is firmly focussed on that. Her parents are very supportive and the way she has started, she will surely one of the best ever to hold the tennis racquet.
