Starting in 2026, Lorenzo Musetti will add José Perlas to his coaching staff, working alongside long-time mentor Simone Tartarini. The move reflects Musetti’s desire to evolve his game and build on the dual-coach model he previously tested with Corrado Barazzutti. Perlas, who recently ended his collaboration with Dusan Lajovic, is expected to begin working with Musetti during the winter training block in Monte Carlo.

A coach with a winning pedigree

José Perlas brings decades of experience and a track record of success. He guided Carlos Moya to a Roland Garros title in 1998 and helped Albert Costa win the same tournament in 2002. Under his leadership, Moya reached world number one and Costa climbed to number six. Perlas also coached Guillermo Coria (ATP No. 3), Nicolas Almagro (ATP No. 9), Juan Carlos Ferrero, and Janko Tipsarevic.

His five-year stint with Fabio Fognini is remembered for its intensity and near-breakthroughs. Perlas often remarked that they came close to the top 10, a milestone Fognini eventually reached.

Musetti’s growth and future goals

Musetti has shown consistent improvement over the past two seasons and is currently in contention for a spot at the Nitto ATP Finals. With tournaments in Metz and Athens still to play, the Italian is focused on finishing the year strong. The addition of Perlas is not about reinvention but refinement—bringing tactical depth and experience to an already cohesive team.

A promising partnership

With Musetti’s maturity and motivation and Perlas’ strategic insight, the collaboration is set to be one of the most intriguing on the ATP Tour. The goal is to elevate Musetti’s consistency and competitiveness, especially on the biggest stages. The challenge ahead is demanding, but the foundation is solid
