Stefanos Tsitsipas has officially withdrawn from the ATP 250 Hellenic Championship in Athens, citing medical advice to rest and recover ahead of the 2026 season. The Greek star had been expected to headline the tournament, which is backed by Novak Djokovic and marks a significant moment for tennis in Greece. However, persistent back issues have forced him to end his 2025 campaign early.

“I’m sad to announce that I won’t be competing at the Hellenic Championship in Athens. My doctor advised me to rest and focus on recovery to be ready for the 2026 season,” Tsitsipas said.

A setback for the Athens event

The Hellenic Championship was set to debut with high expectations, and Tsitsipas’ absence is a blow to the tournament’s profile. Djokovic’s involvement added prestige, and local fans were eager to see their national icon compete on home soil. Despite the disappointment, organizers have expressed support for Tsitsipas’ decision and wished him a full recovery.

Tsitsipas had already missed key events like the Shanghai Masters and Paris Masters due to his injury. His brief appearance at the Six Kings Slam exhibition in Saudi Arabia ended in a straight-sets loss to Jannik Sinner, underscoring his physical limitations.

Eyes on a fresh start

Tsitsipas remains optimistic about his return and is focused on preparing for a strong comeback in 2026. He thanked the tournament organizers for bringing the event to Greece and acknowledged the importance of prioritizing his health.

“It’s disappointing to miss it, but it’s the right choice for my health. I’ll be back stronger,” he added.

With the season behind him, Tsitsipas will now turn his attention to rehabilitation and training, aiming to return to top form when the new year begins.
