Indian tennis icon Rohan Bopanna officially announced his retirement from professional tennis at the age of 45. His final appearance came at the Paris Masters 1000, where he partnered with Alexander Bublik. The announcement marked the end of a career that spanned over 20 years, during which Bopanna became one of the most decorated doubles players in Indian tennis history.
“How do you bid farewell to something that gave your life its meaning? After 20 unforgettable years on tour, it’s time… I’m officially hanging up my racquet,” Bopanna wrote in an emotional post on social media.
Career Highlights and Major Titles
Bopanna’s career includes 26 ATP Tour doubles titles, with six Masters 1000 trophies. He won two Grand Slam titles: the 2024 Australian Open men’s doubles with Matthew Ebden and the 2017 French Open mixed doubles with Gabriela Dabrowski. His victory in Melbourne also made him the oldest Grand Slam men’s doubles champion in the Open Era.
In 2024, Bopanna became the oldest ATP Masters 1000 champion by winning the Miami men’s doubles title at age 44, again with Ebden.
A Legacy of Longevity and Excellence
Beyond his titles, Bopanna’s career was defined by resilience and consistency. He represented India in three Olympic Games and reached the world No. 1 ranking in men’s doubles for the first time at age 43. His achievements have inspired a generation of Indian tennis players and elevated the country’s presence on the global stage.
“Representing India has been the greatest honour of my life,” Bopanna said, reflecting on his journey.
