Jannik Sinner began his pursuit of the world No. 1 ranking with a composed victory over Belgian Zizou Bergs. The Italian, currently ranked No. 2, showed sharp form in his second-round match, breaking early in both sets and never facing a break point. His performance was marked by precision and control, especially on serve.

“Very happy to come through the first match. Very happy how I served today. I was very precise,” said Sinner after the win. He added that starting with an early break helped boost his confidence throughout the match.

Navigating a Unique Surface

The court conditions at La Défense Arena have been a topic of discussion among players, with Carlos Alcaraz and Alexander Zverev both struggling to find rhythm in their matches. Sinner offered insight into the challenges posed by the surface.

“It’s a very unique court here. Usually always struggled a bit,” he admitted. When asked to elaborate, he explained that the ball behaves differently depending on its condition. “With new balls the ball still goes quite fast. It’s not as bouncy.. but then after the ball is quite big and slow. It changes a bit also the timing of the ball,” he said.

Sinner noted that he hadn’t played at the event the previous year, making it difficult to compare the current conditions with past editions. Despite the lack of rhythm in the match, he felt his return game was strong and emphasized the importance of executing the first shots well on any surface.

Looking Ahead

The win extends Sinner’s indoor hard court streak to 22 matches and puts him on track to reclaim the top ranking, especially after Alcaraz’s early exit. He will face Francisco Cerundolo in the next round.

“Let’s see what’s coming tomorrow,”

Sinner concluded, hinting at more detailed feedback once he has another match under his belt.
