Joao Fonseca defeated Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in the final of the Swiss Indoors Basel, securing his second tour-level title and becoming the third-youngest ATP 500 champion since the series began in 2009. The 19-year-old Brazilian, part of the #NextGenATP group, delivered a composed performance to win the match in 86 minutes.

After the final, Fonseca shared the personal significance of the moment. “Since I was young, my mum travelled with me. Since I was 11, I only travelled with her, so that title is for her,” he said, acknowledging the role his mother has played throughout his tennis journey.

A last-minute arrival for a career milestone

Fonseca’s parents were not in Basel during his run to the final, but after his semifinal win over Jaume Munar, they made a spontaneous decision to change their travel plans. Originally en route to Paris, they rerouted to Switzerland and arrived just one hour before the championship match, accompanied by Fonseca’s uncles.

“My parents just came from Brazil. They were coming to Paris and changed their flights and came here one hour before the match with my uncles,”

Fonseca said. “It is just amazing to have them here for the biggest title of my career.”

A rising star in the ATP rankings

Following his victory in Basel, Fonseca leapt into the crowd to embrace his family and coach, celebrating a moment that marked another step forward in his promising career. With the win, he climbs to a career-high No. 28 in the PIF ATP Rankings and improves his season record to 25 wins and 15 losses, according to the Infosys ATP Win/Loss Index.

Fonseca’s Basel triumph adds to his growing reputation, following his success at the Next Gen ATP Finals last December. With his family by his side and momentum building, the young Brazilian continues to make his mark on the tour.
