Holger Rune’s worst fears have been realized following his dramatic retirement from the Stockholm Open semifinal against Ugo Humbert. As reported by Danish outlet Ekstra Bladet, Rune’s mother Aneke confirmed via text message that her son suffered a rupture of the Achilles tendon. The injury occurred while Rune was leading 6-4, 2-2, and visibly in pain before collapsing to the court.

“They are completely sure that it is a torn Achilles tendon, so it’s of course very bad. Holger is, of course, completely devastated,” Aneke Rune wrote in her message.
