During media day in Stockholm, Holger Rune shared his thoughts on the evolving structure of the ATP calendar. While expressing appreciation for the opportunities the tour provides, he also raised concerns about the increasing number of mandatory ATP 500 events.

“It’s long, but we can still choose. If you play well, you can skip a few tournaments,” Rune said. He acknowledged the demanding nature of the schedule but emphasized that top performance allows for strategic rest.

However, Rune was clear about one aspect he finds problematic. “The only thing I’m less happy about is they make more mandatory ATP 500 events, I think that’s a bit unnecessary,”

he added, suggesting that the growing obligations could limit player autonomy.

A dream realized despite the challenges

Despite his reservations, Rune remains enthusiastic about his place on the tour. “It’s long, but for me it’s amazing, that’s something I’ve dreamt of my whole life, being on the tour and playing ATP events,” he said, highlighting the personal significance of his career.

He also noted that this sentiment is likely shared by many of his peers. “I think many others have the same dream,” Rune concluded, reinforcing the idea that the grind of the calendar is balanced by the privilege of competing at the highest level.

Balancing freedom and structure

Rune’s comments reflect a broader conversation among players about the balance between freedom of choice and the structured demands of the ATP tour. While the calendar offers flexibility for those performing well, the increase in mandatory events may challenge that balance.

As the ATP continues to refine its tournament framework, voices like Rune’s offer insight into how players are navigating the evolving landscape—one shaped by ambition, tradition, and the realities of professional sport.
