Rising American tennis star Iva Jovic recently shared her reaction after spending time with Novak Djokovic, describing the experience as both surreal and inspiring. The 17-year-old, who broke into the WTA top 40 after winning the Guadalajara Open, met Djokovic during practice sessions at Wimbledon.
“It was informal, relaxed. He just told me: ‘Whenever you have any questions, I’m here for you,’” she said. The encounter marked a turning point in her young career, as she transitioned from admiring Djokovic from afar to building a personal connection with the 24-time Grand Slam champion.
From admiration to mentorship
Jovic admitted that the meeting left her emotionally stirred. “He’s very kind, very nice. I was a little shocked, it’s still strange for me that I know him,” she commented. Having followed Djokovic throughout her childhood, the idea of now being followed by him on social media and exchanging greetings in person felt surreal.
Their relationship has since evolved into a budding mentorship. “He follows me now, and of course I’ve followed him my whole life. It’s cool that we have a relationship now – I’ll definitely use that and ask him for advice,” she added.
A promising future shaped by experience
With a 21-year age gap between them, Djokovic’s experience and mental strength offer valuable lessons for Jovic, who is still learning to manage the emotional highs and lows of professional tennis. She has spoken openly about struggling with losses, sometimes losing sleep after tough matches, but is determined to build resilience and improve her mental game.
Jovic’s rapid rise and her connection with Djokovic signal a promising future. As she continues to climb the rankings, having access to one of the sport’s greatest minds could prove pivotal in shaping her journey.
