Valentin Vacherot reflects on his journey after defeating Novak Djokovic in Shanghai to become the lowest-ranked man ever to reach a Masters 1000 final.

A Historic Upset in Shanghai

Valentin Vacherot stunned the tennis world by defeating Novak Djokovic 6–3, 6–4 in the semifinal of the Shanghai Masters. Ranked No. 204, the Monegasque qualifier became the lowest-ranked player in history to reach a Masters 1000 final. His victory over the 24-time Grand Slam champion marked a defining moment in his career and a breakthrough for Monaco’s tennis federation.

Staying Grounded Amid the Spotlight

After the match, Vacherot was asked how he manages the emotional weight of such a moment and stays focused with one match still to play. His response offered a glimpse into the values that shaped his rise. “How I got taught to live life where I grew up is to always keep your feet on earth,” he said.

He credited his family, especially his brother Benjamin, who played professionally and was ranked around 200 in the world, as an early source of inspiration. “For me that was already unreal to be 200 in the world. Now to be here…”

he added.
