Holger Rune advanced to the quarter-finals of the 2025 Rolex Shanghai Masters with a hard-fought victory over Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard, winning 6-4, 6-7(7), 6-3 in two hours and 28 minutes. The match featured one of the fastest serves of the tournament, a 235km/h rocket from Mpetshi Perricard, but Rune responded with a stunning return winner that highlighted his resilience from the baseline.

Tactical patience and mental strength

Rune broke Mpetshi Perricard’s serve twice and denied all three break points he faced. Despite losing the second set in a tight tiebreak, the Dane regrouped and dominated the third set with consistent holds and a decisive break in the second game.

“I managed to break him twice. He was serving very well today. I stayed in there every point and was determined for the third set and managed to hold my nerve.” — Holger Rune

Rune hit 36 winners and just nine unforced errors, while Mpetshi Perricard fired 51 winners but struggled with 38 unforced errors. The Frenchman’s net play was effective, but Rune’s control from the baseline proved decisive.

Next challenge for Rune

With this win, Rune reaches his 11th Masters 1000 quarter-final and continues his push toward qualifying for the Nitto ATP Finals. He will next face either Tallon Griekspoor or qualifier Valentin Vacherot in the last eight.
