Bianca Andreescu, once hailed as one of tennis’s brightest stars, is now navigating the emotional challenge of playing in the qualifying rounds of the Wuhan Open. The 2019 US Open champion admitted the experience has been humbling.
“It is certainly a blow to the ego, but I have to put that to one side,” Andreescu told Tennis 365 after her first-round victory. “It was many years ago that I won the US Open and so much has happened since then.”
Despite the setback, she remains focused on her journey back to the top. “I know what I can do. I know what I can accomplish,” she said. “So finding that balance of being patient and being that go-getter that I am to try and get back to the top is a bit tricky.”
Battling inconsistency and injury
Andreescu’s path has been disrupted by recurring injuries, which have affected her rhythm and consistency on the court. “The problem is that I have been so on and off with injuries that I don’t have much rhythm in my playing style,” she explained. “That is going to be a big thing to get back to the top.”
She emphasized how small margins in tennis can make a big difference. “In tennis, it’s literally a point here, a point there, and if you can really sharpen those instincts during those times, I think it’ll make a great difference, but it’s definitely not easy for sure.”
Remembering the rise and enduring the fall
Andreescu’s breakthrough came when she defeated Serena Williams in the final of the US Open, becoming the first Canadian to win a Grand Slam singles title. Her powerful game and fearless attitude made her a fan favorite. But the years that followed were marked by physical setbacks and long stretches away from competition.
Her recent appearance at the China Open ended in a first-round loss to Anna Bondar, a result that underscored the uphill battle she faces in regaining her former status.
Staying focused on the comeback
Despite the challenges, Andreescu remains determined. Her candid reflections reveal a player who understands the difficulty of the road ahead but is not afraid to walk it. With patience and persistence, she hopes to return to the elite level of women’s tennis.
Her journey continues in Wuhan, not as a reigning champion, but as a fighter rebuilding her path one match at a time.
