Alexander Zverev returned to Shanghai with a sense of familiarity and quiet confidence. Having played the tournament since his teenage years, the German star acknowledged the emotional connection he feels with the venue, even if no single moment stands out above the rest.

“It’s a place that brings back many memories, but I’m not sure if there’s anything in particular,” said Zverev during his media availability.

The Federer Quarterfinal

Among the memories that do surface, one match remains vivid: his 2019 quarterfinal victory over Roger Federer. It was a defining moment in Zverev’s career, showcasing his composure and tactical sharpness against one of the sport’s greatest icons.

“The first memory that comes to mind is the match against Roger Federer in the quarterfinals of 2019, that day was very special in the way I played, surely many people still remember it,” he recalled.

That win propelled Zverev into the spotlight and reinforced his ability to perform under pressure on one of the tour’s biggest stages.

Confidence in Familiar Territory

Shanghai has proven to be a productive stop for Zverev, with a final and a semifinal appearance already under his belt. These results have shaped his belief that the conditions suit his game and that success is within reach.

“Here in Shanghai, I have reached a final and another semifinal, enough information to be aware that it’s a place where I can play well, so I’ll work hard to make things go well for me this week,”

he added.

As the tournament unfolds, Zverev’s experience and past performances in Shanghai may serve as a foundation for another deep run. His reflections suggest a player grounded in his journey, yet eager to write new chapters on familiar courts.
