Iga Swiatek recently addressed concerns about the demanding length of the tennis season and its impact on players’ health. Noting the wave of retirements and injuries late in the year, she acknowledged the toll fatigue takes as the calendar advances.

The difficulty of the Asian swing

Swiatek highlighted the Asian swing as particularly grueling. She explained how players feel pressured to keep pushing despite exhaustion, since the season is nearing its end but important tournaments still lie ahead.

Choosing tournaments with health in mind

Discussing the WTA’s mandatory tournament requirements, Swiatek admitted that fitting everything into the schedule is nearly impossible for top players. “I think we have to be smart about it, not really care about the rules and just think what’s healthy for us,”

she said. She left open the possibility of selectively skipping some events to preserve her body, even when those tournaments are deemed mandatory.

Focus on recovery and experience

Swiatek emphasized the importance of proper recovery and having a strong support team to maintain physical health throughout the season. She credited her experience with helping her manage the challenges, but also acknowledged the growing number of injuries in the sport. “There are a lot of injuries. I think it is because the season is too long and too intense.”

Her comments shine a light on the tough balancing act professional tennis players face, striving to compete at the highest level while preserving their long-term health.
