During his recent match at the China Open, Italian tennis player Lorenzo Musetti expressed visible frustration toward some spectators who were repeatedly coughing and disturbing the flow of play. The incident occurred during a tense moment in the second tiebreak, leading Musetti to make remarks that sparked controversy and criticism online.

Sincere apology to fans

Following the backlash, Musetti issued a heartfelt apology addressed to Chinese fans via social media. He clarified that his frustration was directed only at a few individuals causing disruption and was never meant to offend the Chinese people as a whole.

“Dear Chinese fans, I would like to sincerely apologize for what I said in frustration yesterday during my match. My words were directed only at a few individuals in the crowd who were coughing repeatedly and disturbing the play. They were never, in any way, meant for the Chinese people.”

He acknowledged that his choice of words was inappropriate and expressed deep regret for hurting the feelings of many fans.

Respect and gratitude for China

Musetti emphasized his admiration for the Chinese people and his appreciation for the support he has received since he began competing in China in 2018. He described feeling welcomed and at home in the country.

“I have always admired the Chinese people and I truly appreciate playing in your country. I have been coming back to China since 2018 and I always feel very welcome here. I am grateful for the incredible support I constantly receive and for the many fans I have in China.”

He concluded his message by reaffirming his respect and gratitude toward the Chinese fans.

Moving forward

This apology follows a pattern of athletes facing cultural sensitivity challenges while competing internationally. Musetti’s response aims to mend relations and demonstrate respect for the host country and its supporters as he continues his career.
