Murray: “Konta can be world no.1”

Serena Williams hit the headlines with the fantastic news that she is pregnant. This means that the American legend will not play until 2018; Serena’s absence is a huge opportunity for the rest of the players also because the actual world no.1, Angelique Kerber, is struggling to achieve meaningful results to lose her top spot in the rankings already next week (to Serena!).

Murray: “Konta can be the world no.1”

According to Andy Murray, Johanna has strong chances to become a world no.1 if she keeps on playing as she has been doing recently. The Briton commented

“It’s been pretty much 18 months where she’s played at a level where she’s in the top seven or eight players in the world. She was close to getting to Singapore last year, and she’s in with a good shot of doing it this year. I’m sure for all of the women, with Serena out, it’s going to be tough to predict.

If she steps up her game, there’s no reason why she can’t get close to the top.”

Johanna is currently ranked no.7, but she is no.3 in the year to date rankings, just 76 points away from the no.1 Karolina Pliskova. This is going to be interesting.
