Carlos Alcaraz saw his 13-match winning streak come to an abrupt halt at the Laver Cup, going down 6-3, 6-2 to Taylor Fritz. The loss also brought an early end to his return to No. 1 in the PIF ATP Rankings, a position he reclaimed for the first time since 2023.

Fritz’s overpowering display

Fritz dictated play from the baseline and capitalized on Alcaraz’s 19 unforced errors, compared to his own 10. His aggressive shot-making and unwavering court coverage left the Spaniard struggling to impose his usual dominant style.

Alcaraz reflects on the defeat

Alcaraz refused to blame his ranking for the loss, praising his opponent’s quality instead. “It wasn’t the match that I was expecting, but I think I have to look a little bit to him that I think he played great tennis,” he said. “Taylor played a great match, really solid, playing aggressive when he could. I think everything went to his side, so I had to congratulate him and that he played a much better game than I did.”

Ranking pressure not to blame

Asked whether being World No. 1 added stress, Alcaraz dismissed the notion. “It was a little bit of extra pressure, because of the way that the day was going on, but it wasn’t because I’m the No. 1 in the world,” he explained. “I think the ranking is just a number. It shouldn’t give you the pressure that you have to win everything and every match.”
