As the Laver Cup returns to the West Coast, Roger Federer has offered his perspective on which team holds the advantage heading into the 2025 edition. Speaking from San Francisco, where the tournament will be held at the Chase Center, the Swiss legend acknowledged the familiar challenge of jet lag for European players but expressed confidence in Team Europe’s lineup.

“It’s always the classic question before the Laver Cup. I always think I know the answer…the west coast can be tricky for the Europeans with the jet lag,” Federer said. “I think with Carlos on the team…give Europe the edge.”

Alcaraz’s presence tips the balance

Carlos Alcaraz, fresh off a dominant summer season, is seen as a key factor in Europe’s favor. His arrival in San Francisco well ahead of the event has given the team a boost in preparation and morale. Federer, who co-founded the Laver Cup, believes Alcaraz’s energy and form could be decisive in the singles matches, which are expected to determine the outcome.

“With Carlos already here and ready to go, I give Europe the edge,”

Federer added. Team Europe also features Alexander Zverev, Holger Rune, Casper Ruud, Flavio Cobolli, and Jakub Mensik, while Team World counters with Taylor Fritz, Reilly Opelka, Joao Fonseca, Francisco Cerundolo, Alex De Minaur, and Alex Michelsen.

Jet lag and surface conditions still a concern

Despite his optimism, Federer didn’t shy away from pointing out the logistical hurdles that could impact performance. Traveling from Europe to the West Coast often requires a longer adjustment period, and the indoor hard court conditions in San Francisco may favor players more accustomed to North American surfaces.

“It’s far away, and with jet lag, it can take its toll,” Federer noted. The Laver Cup’s format, which includes singles and doubles matches across three days, demands sharpness and adaptability from every player.

A new chapter for captains and contenders

This year’s edition also marks a shift in leadership, with Yannick Noah captaining Team Europe and Andre Agassi leading Team World for the first time. Both bring fresh energy and strategic insight to their squads, adding intrigue to an already competitive field.

As the opening matches approach, Federer’s remarks have set the tone for a weekend of high-stakes tennis and national pride. With Alcaraz anchoring Team Europe and the West Coast atmosphere adding unpredictability, the Laver Cup promises another thrilling chapter in its growing legacy.
