Stefanos Tsitsipas gave everything for his country during Greece’s Davis Cup tie against Brazil, even while battling a persistent lower back injury. Despite visible discomfort, the 27-year-old chose to compete, hoping to help his team advance. “I played with pain. But I couldn’t abandon my team,” he reportedly told those close to him after the match.

The decision came at a cost. Following the tie, Tsitsipas underwent an MRI scan that revealed inflammation in his lower back. Medical staff advised immediate treatment, and today he received a corticosteroid injection directly into the affected vertebra.

Beijing ruled out, Shanghai remains a goal

Due to the severity of the inflammation and the recovery required after the injection, Tsitsipas will not participate in the ATP 500 tournament in Beijing, which was set to be his first stop on the Asian swing. “We had to be cautious. Competing in Beijing would have risked further damage,” said a member of his medical team.

However, Tsitsipas is still aiming to return in time for the Shanghai Masters 1000, scheduled from October 1 to 12. It’s one of the final major events of the season, and a strong showing could help him maintain his ranking and momentum heading into the year’s closing stretch.

A season marked by resilience

Tsitsipas has faced physical setbacks throughout the year, including recurring back issues that have affected his movement and consistency. Yet his commitment to both national and individual competition remains strong. “I’m doing everything I can to stay on court and compete at the level I expect from myself,” he said earlier this season.

With Shanghai on the horizon, the Greek star will focus on recovery and preparation. Fans and fellow players alike hope to see him return to form in time for one of the tour’s most prestigious events.
