Carlos Alcaraz took a break from training to visit Alcatraz Island, the iconic former prison located in the heart of San Francisco Bay. Known as “The Rock,” the site has long symbolized isolation and resilience, offering a striking contrast to the energy and camaraderie of the Laver Cup, where Alcaraz will represent Team Europe.

A moment of reflection before competition

Alcaraz’s visit to Alcatraz came just days before the start of the 2025 Laver Cup at the Chase Center. Walking through the narrow corridors and historic cells, the world No. 1 appeared contemplative, absorbing the weight of the landmark’s history. The experience offered a rare moment of solitude for the 22-year-old Spaniard, who arrives in San Francisco fresh off back-to-back titles at the Cincinnati Open and US Open.

Connecting with the city and its stories

The tour of Alcatraz allowed Alcaraz to connect with the cultural and historical layers of the host city. From the panoramic views of the Golden Gate Bridge to the eerie silence of the prison blocks, the visit added depth to his time in San Francisco. It also served as a symbolic pause before the intensity of team competition, where he will join forces with Alexander Zverev, Casper Ruud, and others under the leadership of captain Yannick Noah.

Team Europe prepares for a fierce challenge

Alcaraz’s presence at the Laver Cup marks his second appearance in the event, following a successful debut in Berlin where he helped Team Europe secure a dramatic 13–11 victory over Team World. With a roster that blends youth and experience, Team Europe is gearing up for a high-stakes battle against a formidable Team World lineup. The visit to Alcatraz, while brief, offered a grounding moment before the spotlight returns to the court.
