The Laver Cup was launched in 2017 as a tribute to Rod Laver, one of the greatest players in tennis history. Inspired by golf’s Ryder Cup, the event pits Team Europe against Team World in a three-day competition that blends individual brilliance with collective strategy. Each team consists of six players—three selected based on ATP rankings after Roland Garros and three chosen by the team captain. The format includes singles and doubles matches, with points increasing each day to heighten the drama and ensure the final sessions are decisive.

The tournament rotates annually between European and global cities, and in 2025, it makes its debut at the Chase Center in San Francisco, marking the third time the event is held in the United States.

Team Europe brings depth and experience to the court

Team Europe enters the 2025 edition with a formidable lineup led by world No. 2 Carlos Alcaraz, making his second Laver Cup appearance. Alongside him are Alexander Zverev, Holger Rune, Casper Ruud, Jakub Mensik, and Flavio Cobolli. The team is captained by Yannick Noah, with Tim Henman serving as vice captain. Zverev, a veteran of the event, will be making his sixth appearance, while Mensik and Rune are debutants eager to make their mark.

Cobolli, who served as an alternate in Berlin last year, returns as a starter after a breakthrough season that included title wins in Hamburg and Bucharest. The blend of youth and experience gives Team Europe a balanced and dangerous edge.

Team World looks to reclaim the title on home soil

Team World is captained by Andre Agassi, with Pat Rafter as vice captain. The squad features Taylor Fritz, Alex de Minaur, Francisco Cerundolo, Reilly Opelka, Alex Michelsen, and Joao Fonseca. Fritz, the highest-ranked American and world No. 5, leads the team with five Laver Cup appearances under his belt. Cerundolo returns for his third straight year, while Fonseca, a rising teen star, makes his debut.

De Minaur steps in for Frances Tiafoe, while Opelka and Michelsen replace Tommy Paul and Ben Shelton. Despite the changes, Team World remains competitive and motivated to win in front of a home crowd at the Chase Center.

San Francisco prepares for a weekend of elite tennis

The Chase Center, home to the Golden State Warriors, has been transformed into a striking tennis venue featuring the Laver Cup’s signature black court. From September 19 to 21, fans will witness high-intensity matches, strategic doubles pairings, and the emotional highs that come with representing a team.

With Team Europe holding a 5–2 lead in the all-time series, Team World is determined to close the gap. The atmosphere in San Francisco promises to be electric, as the city embraces the spirit of competition and camaraderie that defines the Laver Cup.
