Czech Tomas Machac and American Jenson Brooksby will join Team Europe and Team World, respectively, as alternates for the eighth edition of the Laver Cup, set to take place at Chase Center in San Francisco from September 19–21, 2025. As alternates, both players will participate in all team activities and appearances, and may step into the six-man lineup if any squad member is unable to compete during the three-day event.

Machac’s breakthrough season earns him a spot

At 24 years old, Tomas Machac has emerged as one of the most dangerous competitors on the ATP Tour. His 2025 season has been marked by consistent progress and key victories. He reached the third round at both the Australian Open and US Open, and claimed his first ATP title in Acapulco, defeating Alejandro Davidovich-Fokina in straight sets at the ATP 500 event. Machac also bested Team World’s Reilly Opelka twice this season—once in Melbourne and again en route to the fourth round in Miami. These performances propelled him to a career-high ranking of No.20 in March, solidifying his place among Europe’s rising talents.

Brooksby returns to the spotlight

Jenson Brooksby, also 24, brings a mix of resilience and flair to Team World. A native of Sacramento, California, Brooksby turned professional in 2021 and quickly made headlines by reaching the fourth round of the US Open as a wildcard. That run made him the youngest American to do so since Andy Roddick in 2003. At the 2023 Australian Open, Brooksby stunned Team Europe’s Casper Ruud, then ranked No.3 in the world. Though injuries have disrupted his momentum, Brooksby has climbed as high as No.33 in the ATP rankings and remains one of the most promising players in American tennis.

Captains and squads set for a high-stakes showdown

Team Europe will be led by incoming Captain Yannick Noah and Vice Captain Tim Henman. Their 2025 squad includes Carlos Alcaraz, Alexander Zverev, Holger Rune, Casper Ruud, Flavio Cobolli—who served as an alternate in 2024—and Jakub Mensik. With Machac now added as a backup, the team blends experience with youthful energy.

Team World, under the leadership of Captain Andre Agassi and Vice Captain Pat Rafter, features Taylor Fritz, Alex de Minaur, Francisco Cerundolo, Joao Fonseca, Alex Michelsen, and Reilly Opelka. Brooksby’s inclusion adds depth and local appeal, especially with the event taking place in his home state.

Anticipation builds for San Francisco showdown

With a mix of seasoned stars and emerging talent, the 2025 Laver Cup promises high drama and competitive fire. The addition of Machac and Brooksby as alternates not only strengthens their respective teams but also reflects the growing depth in global tennis. As the Chase Center prepares to host its first Laver Cup, fans can expect a weekend of intensity, strategy, and unforgettable moments.
