In a match that will be remembered for years, Ivan Ivanov triumphed over fellow Bulgarian Alexander Vasilev with a 7-5, 6-3 victory in the boys’ singles final at the US Open. This marked the first time two Bulgarian players faced off in a Grand Slam junior final, highlighting the nation’s rising presence in the sport. The crowd at Flushing Meadows witnessed a spirited contest between two close friends and fierce competitors, both of whom have climbed the ITF junior rankings with impressive consistency.
Ivanov’s flawless summer campaign
With this win, Ivanov completed the rare Wimbledon-US Open double, a feat last achieved by another Bulgarian, Grigor Dimitrov, in 2008—the very year Ivanov was born. The 16-year-old, who trains at the Rafael Nadal Academy, has dominated the junior circuit this season, showcasing a powerful serve, relentless forehand, and calm under pressure. His run through the US Open included victories over top contenders and culminated in a composed performance in the final, where he converted five of nine break points and hit 19 winners.
Vasilev’s breakthrough and resilience
Despite the loss, Alexander Vasilev’s journey to the final was equally impressive. The left-hander overcame a tough draw, including a comeback win in the semifinals, and displayed grit and determination throughout the tournament. A semifinalist at Wimbledon earlier this year, Vasilev has proven himself as one of the brightest talents in junior tennis and remains a strong contender for future titles.
A new generation emerges
Ivanov’s victory not only adds another Grand Slam title to Bulgaria’s growing list but also signals the arrival of a new generation of players ready to make their mark. With both Ivanov and Vasilev ranked among the top juniors globally, Bulgarian tennis is entering a promising era. Their rivalry, built on mutual respect and shared ambition, could become a defining storyline in the years ahead.
Grigor Dimitrov in 2025
Ranked no.25, the Bulgarian played his last match on the 7th of July when he had to retire when playing against world no.1 Jannik Sinner in the 4th round and the scoreline was 3-6 5-7 2-2 .
Currently, during this season the Bulgarian achieved a compiled 17-11 record. Grigor Dimitrov’s most significant result of this season was reaching the semifinal in Brisbane and Miami.
