Marcel Granollers and Horacio Zeballos claimed the 2025 US Open men’s doubles crown with a dramatic 3-6, 7-6(4), 7-5 win over Britain’s Neal Skupski and Joe Salisbury. The Spanish-Argentine duo, seeded fifth, had to dig deep after dropping the opening set and facing three championship points in the deciding set. Their resilience under pressure turned the match around in front of an electric Arthur Ashe Stadium crowd.
Saving match points to turn the tide
The turning point came at 4-5 in the third set, when Skupski and Salisbury held triple match point on Zeballos’s serve. Granollers and Zeballos reeled off eight consecutive points to hold serve and then broke for the first and only time in the match. Granollers sealed the break with a lunging return winner into the open court, setting up the chance to serve for the championship.
Second Grand Slam title of the season
This victory marked their second major title of 2025, having also defeated the same British pair in the French Open final earlier in the year. The win completed a remarkable run that also included a Wimbledon quarterfinal triumph over Skupski and Salisbury, underlining their dominance in this rivalry throughout the season.
British duo’s near miss
For Skupski and Salisbury, the defeat was a bitter blow. It was their fifth final of the year and their fifth loss, despite holding multiple opportunities to close out the match. Salisbury, a three-time US Open champion with former partner Rajeev Ram, was aiming for a fourth title in New York, while Skupski was seeking his first.
Looking ahead to future battles
Granollers and Zeballos’s triumph boosts them to second in the ATP Doubles Race, putting them in strong contention for the year-end number one ranking. Skupski and Salisbury vowed to keep pushing, with eyes already on the Australian Open for another chance to turn their close calls into silverware.
