Ostapenko reaches the Charleston final

Jelena Ostapenko confirms that she can be a top player in the years to come.

The 19-year-old from Latvia reaches the final of the prestigious tournament in Charleston after she defeated Mirjana Lucic-Baroni 6-3 5-7 6-4. Jelena was extremely good when she shrugged off her disappointment of not being able to serve out the match when she was leading 6-3 5-4. The Latvian eventually lost the 2nd set, but then she found the mental strength to have a great start in the decider to grab a 4-1 lead. Finally, Jelena managed to win the match after scoring just one point more than her opponent (98 vs. 97).

Ostapenko will play Daria Kasaktina for the title.

Nice to get to another final. OSTAPENKO

This is Jelena’s 3rd career final as she was the runner-up in Quebec City (2015 defeated by Annika Beck) and Doha (2016 defeated by Carla Suarez Navarro).

After the match, Jelena commented

“It’s really nice to be in the third final, but the first final on clay court, and especially here in Charleston. I’m really looking forward to tomorrow’s match.

[Kasaktina ] kind of defensive player, and I think clay is her favorite surface, but I’m just going to try to stay consistent and be aggressive at the same time and just play my game.”
