Known for his spectacular runs and accurate finishes on the football field, Arjen Robben has made his formal debut on the professional padel circuit. Participating in the FIP Bronze competition in Westerbork, Netherlands, alongside Werner Lootsma, the 41-year-old former Bayern Munich and Netherlands great is embracing a new competitive environment.
A great start and a wildcard entry
Robben and Lootsma made an immediate impression after entering the tournament with a wildcard. They defeated former football player Mark Veldmate and Ralph Boekema in a fierce qualification match to earn a berth in the main draw. More than 500 people watched the match, demonstrating the enthusiasm for Robben’s debut.
Taking on top-tier competition
They faced a formidable obstacle in their opening encounter in the main competition. The pair took on Thijs Roper and Sten Richters, who were first and third in the Dutch padel rankings, respectively. Robben’s agility and competitive spirit have not lessened, even though his national ranking of 244 is rather low.
Robben’s switch to padel from football
Robben has discovered a new passion in padel since he retired from football in 2021. Although he has taken part in a number of amateur competitions, this is his first time competing in a professional tournament with international recognition. Now that he has obtained a professional license, Robben has started to accrue points in the global padel rankings.
Athletes’ growing interest in padel
Robben’s action reflects a larger pattern of retired players taking up padel as a hobby once their careers are over. Players used to intense competition are drawn to the sport’s quick tempo and strategic complexity. It is anticipated that Robben’s participation will increase padel’s awareness in the Netherlands and encourage others to do the same.
