Jack Draper returned to singles action at the 2025 US Open with a hard-fought four-set win over Argentine qualifier Federico Agustin Gomez. The British No. 1, seeded fifth, prevailed 6-4, 7-5, 6-7(7), 6-2 in a match that lasted just over three hours. It was Draper’s first competitive singles match since Wimbledon, and all eyes were on his left arm, which had kept him off the court for nearly two months.

Injury Concerns and Recovery

Draper revealed that he had been dealing with bone bruising in his left humerus, an injury that forced him to skip key summer tournaments in Toronto and Cincinnati. “I didn’t hit any serves for about a month,” he said. “Then groundies, I was able to hit after maybe two-and-a-half weeks.” He wore a compression sleeve during the match to support the arm and admitted to slightly dialing back his serve speed to manage discomfort.

Adjusting His Game

Despite the physical limitations, Draper found ways to adapt. His serve averaged between 106 and 111 mph—slower than usual—but he leaned on precision and placement to stay competitive. “I’ve definitely had to rein in my serve a little bit to keep the pain down,” he explained. “At the same time, I feel like my accuracy is almost a bit better.” His kick serve proved effective, helping him avoid being broken until late in the second set.

Mental and Physical Resilience

Draper acknowledged that the match wasn’t his finest performance, but he welcomed the challenge. “I needed tennis in my legs. I needed to play a three-hour match,” he said. “I was almost a bit happy when I lost the third because my level wasn’t amazing.” He regrouped in the fourth set, showing improved movement and shot selection to close out the win.

Looking Ahead

With the first hurdle cleared, Draper is set to face Belgium’s Zizou Bergs in the second round. While he remains cautious about his arm, he’s optimistic about his form and fitness. “I’m so happy to be able to compete,” he said. “It’s not something that’s holding me back, but I’m still looking after it.” His return to Flushing Meadows, where he reached the semifinals last year, signals a renewed push toward a deep run in the final Grand Slam of the season.
