Emma Raducanu enters the 2025 US Open ranked No. 35 in the world, narrowly missing out on a seeded position. Despite the change in status since her historic win in 2021, she appeared calm and content during her pre-event press conference. The British player spoke candidly about how her mindset has evolved over the past four years.
“Compared to four years ago, I feel relaxed, I feel happy,” she said. “I feel in a way like the same off court in terms of just enjoying my tennis, enjoying practising, enjoying competing, and the process of getting better.”
Navigating Pressure and Public Scrutiny
Raducanu acknowledged the challenges that followed her breakthrough victory, particularly the intense scrutiny and negativity that came with sudden fame. She admitted that the weight of expectations and criticism affected her in the years that followed, but she now feels more grounded.
“When I won in ’21, I guess I didn’t know about this world of potential negativity and bringing people down,” she said. “That kind of affected me a lot in the last few years. It still definitely gets me from time to time.”
Rediscovering Joy in the Game
Despite the ups and downs, Raducanu emphasized that she has found a renewed sense of joy in her daily routine. Surrounded by a supportive team and focused on personal growth, she feels more at peace with her journey in tennis.
“Overall I think I can enjoy what I’m doing day to day a lot more,” she said. “I have good people around. I’m just happy that I’m in this place with my tennis.”
Looking Ahead with Perspective
As she prepares to face a qualifier in the opening round, Raducanu’s outlook is centered on progress rather than pressure. Her reflections reveal a player who has matured through experience and is now embracing the sport with clarity and purpose. The 2025 US Open may not begin with the spotlight of a top seed, but Raducanu’s presence carries the quiet strength of someone who has learned to thrive beyond the headlines.
